  • This colorful Floral Heart Box is imported from Kashmiri, India, and formed from paper-maché using a traditional crafting process.

  • Each Heart Box is hand painted, which makes every one an original! As an historical art form, paper-maché objects are traditionally decorated with scenes from nature or courtly scenes from India's history.

  • Covered in bright colors of Gold, Green, Yellow and Red, it's a great Storage Box for small jewelry items and can also be a Gift box, a Storage Box, a Catch-All Box.....so many uses! The inside is solid Black.

    THE PROCESS of creating a quality piece of paper-maché is a lengthy one that entails many Artisans and many weeks. To being the process, the paper is soaked up to 5 weeks, then beaten into pulp by an over-sized mortar. The pulp is dried in the sun until it turns to powder, and the powder is mixed with rice water and allowed to congeal into a paste that is poured into a wooden mold and allowed to form.

    When the Box is released from the mold, it is smoothed with a pumice stone and covered with tissue and glue. The background color is then applied by hand and the Box moves on to a Master Artist who sketches out the scene or design for other Artists to fill in with paints. Finally, 2 coats of lacquer are applied and the Box dries for 2-5 days.
