This cute and colorful Siamese Cat Box is imported from Kashmiri, India, and formed from paper-maché using a traditional crafting process.

Each oval Box is hand painted, which makes every one an original! As an historical art form, paper-maché objects are traditionally decorated with scenes from nature or courtly scenes from India's history. Colors include Yellow, Green, Red, Tan, Brown and Black. The inside is solid Black.

When this Box is closes, the Lid will stay in place, making it a great Storage Box for small jewelry items! It can also be a Gift box, a Storage Box, a Catch-All Box.....so many uses!

THE PROCESS of creating a quality piece of paper-maché is a lengthy one that entails many Artisans and many weeks. To being the process, the paper is soaked up to 5 weeks, then beaten into pulp by an over-sized mortar. The pulp is dried in the sun until it turns to powder, and the powder is mixed with rice water and allowed to congeal into a paste that is poured into a wooden mold and allowed to form.

When the Box is released from the mold, it is smoothed with a pumice stone and covered with tissue and glue. The background color is then applied by hand and the Box moves on to a Master Artist who sketches out the scene or design for other Artists to fill in with paints. Finally, 2 coats of lacquer are applied and the Box dries for 2-5 days.
